Solar jumps 3.6% for week

Signs of stabilization in durable goods manufacturing and housing bolstered investor appetite for risk as U.S. stock rose for a fourth consecutive week--the longest positive stretch since last April, according to the MarketWatch weekly review.

The Dow gained 252 points up to finish at 10860, a 2.4% rise since Friday. The NASDAQ was up nearly 66 to end at 2381, a 2.8% gain. The 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) gained nearly 15 points to 418, a 3.6% gain for the week. All but Canadian Solar and Westinghouse Solar were up with Amtel Systems and SunPower the biggest winners.

Sep 13-17: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Shine Again

Solar index breaks 400 first time since April 30

Stocks in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) broke the 400 mark for the first time in over four months. The 20SSI finished Friday up over 11 points for the week at 403.7, nearly a 3% gain. The Dow also gained 145 to end at 10608, a gain of 1.4%. The NASDAQ showed the third straight week of gains, rising 73 points to finish the week at 2316, a 3.3% jump. In general, the tech-heavy NASDAQ index along with the 20SSI fared better than all other major indexes.

Sep 6-10: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Up Slightly

Second straight week of gains for all three

Upbeat reports from China and Japan showing an improving global economy helped bolster major indexes for a second straight week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained nearly 15 points since September 3, ending at 10464, a .15% gain. The NASDAQ composite rose 9 points to finish a 2242, a .4% rise. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) gained just over 2 points to finish at 392.35, a .6% rise. Solar's biggest winners were JA Solar and SunTech.

Aug 30-Sep 3: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Soar

Best pre-Labor Day week in two decades

An encouraging jobs report pushed stocks this week to the best since the beginning of August. The DJIA finished at 10448, up 297 point since last Friday, a 2.9% surge. NASDAQ stocks gain 80 points to end at 2234, a 3.7% upswing. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI)jumped 33 points to 390, a 9.3% gain.

The market jumped when nonfarm payrolls showed jobs slowing at half the rate predicted by economists. The Labor Department reported 54,000 lost jobs in August which matched the revised losses recorded in July, according to the MarketWatch weekly wrap-up.

Friday's jobs numbers paralelled recent data on manufacturing and housing that also exceeded expecations, helping to reverse a long string of disappointing data that drove the Dow's biggest August drop since 2001.

All issues in the 20SSI gained since last Friday. The leading solar winners were Amtel Systems, GT Solar and Westinghouse Solar, formerly Akeena.
