Feb 22-26: Dow, NASDAQ Slip: Solar Down 5%

Solar at lowest since April

The Dow slipped 77 points since last Friday to finish at 10325.26, a .75% loss. NASDAQ fared better with a nearly a 6-point drop to end at 2238.26. a .25% slip. Composite shares in the 20 Solar Stocks Index dropped nearly 19 points finishing a 353.08, almost a 5% slide.

Still, stocks in the DJIA and NASDAQ finished February considerably higher than at the end of January as the NASDAQ composite gained over 4%. February was the best month of trading for the two major indexes since November. The 20SSI lost 5.55% since January 29.

MarketWatch reports the modest gains "lifted by some improvement in U.S. economic data, though worries about consumer spending and sovereign debt kept a lid on optimism."

Investors were heartened on Friday by a Commerce Department report which said the fourth quarter last year grew by 5.9%--best since Q3 of 2003--surpassing expectations of 5.7%. Consumer spending was more modest than expected however with a 1.7% rate increase when 2% was expected.

Solar stocks should make a comeback soon as more people "think solar" when the days get longer and sunnier.

Feb 16-19: Dow, NASDAQ Up 3%; Solar By a Hair

Dow gains all four days

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained over 303 point for the week to end at 10402.35, a 3%. NASDAQ was close behind with a 60-point jump to 2243.87, a rise of 2.7%. Solar issues in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) eked out a minute .07 to finish up at 372.02.

According to MarketWatch, Dow's blue chip investors fretted less about the Greece's dire financial straits and are beginning to see signs in the U.S. that the recovery is taking hold. This trend continued Friday when the Fed moved to increase the discount rate on emergency loans, interpreted by investors the such a hike is a sign of a strengthening U.S. economy since banks no longer need the extraordinary measures put in place at the height of the crisis.

Besides the Fed, central banks in China, Australia and elsewhere have cut back on the easy flow of money to banking institutions.

Solar is typically slow in winter and should pick up as demand for systems and those already sold when the snow and ice go and installations can be made.

Feb 8-12: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Inch Up

Friday started 160-points up and slipped, however

Despite a sizeable drop Friday, the Dow still gained nearly 87 points to finish at 10099.14, a .86% gain for the week. The NASDAQ followed suit with a 42-point gain to end at 2183.53, nearly a 2% gain. The 20 Solar Stocks Index posted a miniscule gain of .23 to end at 371.95.

Early Friday, the Dow was up by as much as 160 points before slipping. The entire week of trading was volatile so the finish is rather gratifying.

"Our domestic economy [in the U.S.] is doing a little better than we thought it would; the international economy a little weaker," said Standard & Poor's economist David Wyss in today's MarketWatch.

Feb 1-5: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Down Less Than 1%

Solar stocks are bleeding less... for now

Although falling below 10,000 this week, the Dow Jones Industrial Averages dropped 55 points to close at 10012.23, a .55% dip. The NASDAQ slid six points to end at 2141.22, off .29% from last week. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) shaved less than a point from last Friday ending at 371.71, a .26% slip.

The week was wild as triple-digit changes for the Dow occurred on three days. The upswing today could be related to an encouraging jobs report that showed national unemployment at 9.7%, the lowest since August. MarketWatch reports that retailers through January posted five straight weeks of strong sales as Holiday gift cards are getting redeemed and more. clearance sales.

The American auto industry was mixed as Ford and GM posted increased sales and Chrysler losing. For the first time in a generation U.S. automakers may gain from Toyota's continuing problems with almost its entire line-up of cars. The Prius, the darling of Toyota for the past decade, is now facing an investigation by federal regulators about complaints of the breaking system and headlights suddenly going out. Many industry watchers are saying Toyota's climb back to customer trust could take a long time.

Thirteen solar stocks actually gained by small margins this week. The biggest winners were JA Solar and Trina Solar, up 6% and 9% respectively and several in the +3% range.
