May 24-28: NASDAQ Up; Dow, Solar Slip

Major indexes lose 8% this month

A downgrade of Spain's debt ends the worst month for stocks in 15 months. Since last Friday the Dow slipped 57 points to 10136.55, a .56% loss, but much less hemorrhaging than a week ago. The NASDAQ composite actually gained 28 points to end at 2257.04, a 1.25% hop. The 20 Solar Stocks Index fell just 2 points to end at 335.54.

Some have called May's drop as the beginning of a bear market and more is to come. However, the Dow is still hovering at the milestone 10,000 which is 35% above its level in February 2009. Banks in California and Nevada failed this week to bring the 2010 national tally to 78.

Nine of the 20SSI stocks gained and two showed no net change for the week. Biggest winners were SunPower, Solarfun and Renesola.

May 17-21: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Slip More

Maybe "flash crash" wasn't an anomaly

When the market tumbled precipitously about two weeks ago, some thought a computer glitch was part of the blame. On May 6 the Dow dropped to 9870--nearly a thousand points. But today the Dow finished at 10193, just above that earlier low so blaming outlying factors is questionable. Maybe the "flash crash" did a fair job of pricing the market, after all.

The Dow was off 427 points from last Friday. The NASDAQ composite fell 118 points to 2229 for the week. The 20SSI lost nearly 21 points to end today at 337.56. All but one stock, GT Solar, slipped to lows not seen in about a year. Unease with the European financial situation continues to rock stocks.

May 10-14: Dow, NASDAQ Up; Solar Slips by Sliver

General bounce back from last week

All major indexes made significant gains earlier this week but cut back by Friday. The Dow went over 10800 at midweek on enthusiasm for the large European bailout package then scaled back yesterday and today on renewed worries about Europe's finances.

The DJIA gained 241 points from last Friday to finish today at10620.16, a 2.3% boost. The NASDAQ composite climbed 81 points to end at 2346.85, nearly a 3.6% rise for the week. Although 13 companies gained in the 20 Solar Stocks Index, the index lost less than a point to finish at 358.19.

Now that Germany's very generous solar feed in tariff is being officially cut back this summer, many of the larger panel makers see their stocks in flux. The California Solar Initiative, once the flagship of all U.S. solar incentive programs, is seeing success as a double sword. As residential and commercial PV system installations exploded last year, rebates have triggered down significantly. Despite continuing low panel prices, rebates for PG&E, SCE and SDG&E customers don't amount to much so sales are slowing.

Solar winners for the week include Entech Solar, Akeena Solar, ECD and Suntech. Losers included First Solar, LDK Solar and SunPower.

May 3-7: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Crash

Three events converge to create crunch

Wall Street saw 2008-like slides the past week on further bad news from Greece. Demonstrations and a continuing shaky financial situation in that country bodes bad for the world's economy as other countries in Europe on nearly-as-shaky ground may see to follow suit into default. The week's slide was further exacerbated by the Gulf oil spill and an apparent glitch/mistake in trading programming in New York.

The Dow dropped 629 points for the week to 10379.60, a 6% tumble. The NASDAQ composite lost nearly 196 points to end Friday at 2265.64, an 8.6% drop. All listed in the 20 Solar Stocks Index dropped and the composite fall was 54 points to 359 even, a 15% decline. Wall Street hopes for a rapid rebound as a feeding frenzy by bargain hunters could lead the way on Monday. Bad news has a way of evening out...
