March 22-26: Dow, NASDAQ Rise 4th Straight Week

Solar about even with two weeks ago

The Dow and NASDAQ completed their longest positive four-week stretch since August. The DJIA gained 108 points to finish end Friday at 10850.36, a 1% rise. NASDAQ posted a 21-point climb for the week, ending today at 2395.13, a .87% hop. Issues in the 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) finished today at 384.59, a 3.5% jump to where the index ended March 12.

MarketWatch says investors were buoyed by news that neighbors of Greece have agreed to a plan in conjunction with the IMF to bail out the debt-burdened nation.

As the Dow is getting close to the 11000 mark--the level at which it was in late September 2008 when the financial crisis hit--Wall Street traders see another correction due to shake out any speculative excesses.

Solar winners included JA Solar (+10.6%), Renesola (+15%), and SolarFun (10%) followed by Amtel Systems, GT Solar, JA Solar in the +6% range. Facing continuing stiff competition, once-mighty SunPower shows consistent slippage. Reports of panel prices rising as overstocks are being bought up. Still, certain Chinese makers are offering great deals.

March 15-19: Dow, NASDAQ Up; Solar Slips

March continues strong so far

The Dow and NASDAQ gained more momentum this week. Gaining 117 points, the DJIA closed Friday at 10741.98. Since February 26 the Dow has gained 417 points, a 4% rise. The NASDAQ rose 7 points to finish at 2374.41. However, stocks in the 20SSI composite slipped 13 points to finish at 371.55, nearly a 4% dip from last week.

The slip by solar is odd as inventories of panels are beginning to be grabbed up by Germany and many large-scale projects finally getting underway in the U.S. Maybe investors know more than this writer knows. Time will tell.

March 8-12: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Gain Yet Again

Solar stocks beat major indexes

After a lackluster February, U.S. stocks posted a second straight week of gains. The Dow gained 58 points to finish at 10624.69, a .6% upswing from last Friday. The NASDAQ did better by jumping 41 points and closing at 2367.66, a 1.8% surge from last week. Solar stocks in the 20SSI surpassed both major indexes by gaining over 15 points for the week to finish at 385.01, 4.1% up from March 5.

According to MarketWatch stocks made modest gains due in part to the .3% rise in U.S. retail sales in February even factoring in the negative impact of last month's severe snowstorms on the East Coast.
