July 26-30: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Have Good Month

Economy improving slowly

A trickle of confidence in the markets returned in July. U.S. and European stocks recovered much of the losses of earlier months showing definite but slow growth while dumping gold and U.S. dollar as a result.

The Dow finished at 10465.94, a gain of 41 points or .4% since last Friday. The NASDAQ slipped 15 points to 2254.70, a .65% loss. Stocks in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) fell 29 points to 348.76, over an 8% drop for the week.

Satcon, a solar inverter maker, gained 24% to be the week's biggest gainer. MEMC, a chip maker, slid over 22% to be the biggest loser of the 20SSI for the week. On July 2, the 20SSI finished at 333 then hit a high of 363 on July 9, then continued to slip the next three week to finish at today's 349.

July 19-23: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Surge

Major indexes gain 3-5%

Investors were relieved European banks mostly passed government stress tests so they switched their focus back the underlying strength of U.S. corporate earnings, according to yesterday's weekly stock summary by MarketWatch.

All of the three major market indexes showed marked gains for a week that included second quarter earnings from a slew of big-name companies. The latest boost came from General Electric (GE 15.71, +0.50, +3.29%) raising its quarterly dividend by 20%.

"The stress tests ended up not to be so stressful after all," said Burt White, chief investment officer at LPL Financial in the MarketWatch summary. "At the end of the day, the market is viewing this as sort of a mile marker to get behind us."

The Dow finished Friday at 10425, up nearly 326 points from last week for an upbeat 3.235% gain. NASDAQ did even better finishing at 2269, over a 90-point boost or 4.149%. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) beat the Street to end Friday at 378, a 22-point surge or 6.084%.

Eighteen in the 20SSI were up for the week with SolarFun, MEMC and Akeena Solar leading the way. Only Entech Solar and SunPower were off for the week

July 12-16: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Slip Slightly

Friday was a bloodbath

What seemed to be a continuing upswing for stocks ended Friday when the Dow dropped 250 points and finished at 10097.9, about a 1% drop for the week. NASDAQ also lost and finished at 2179.05, a .8% drop since last week. The 20 Solar Stocks Index took a 6.64 point knock to end at 356.29, a 1.8% decline.

It was a good week in other ways. The Senate passed a bank reform bill, earnings reports were not bad, BP capped the oil leak, the Northeast heatwave lessened a little and Apple showed plans to correct the antenna on its latest i-Phone. However, MarketWatch reported that on Wednesday murky economic data started flowing in from the Federal Reserve board's last meeting and reports of retail sales dipping in June. By Thursday stock declines began stacking up so Friday's action came as little surprise.

July 5-9: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Rally Big Time (Adjusted)

Big bounce back

U.S. stocks had their best week in nearly a year on optimism of second-quarter earnings that propelled a surge from the worst levels this year.

The DJIA shot 511 points up to finish Friday at 10197.72, a 5.3% gain. NASDAQ followed suit with a 105-point gain to 2196.45, a 5% jump. The 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) saw a second straight plus week with a eight-point gain to 362.93, a 9% bump. (NOTE: SSI total was first reported closing at 341.28 for the week. Corrected 7/17/10)

Nineteen in the 20SSI gained with JA Solar, SolarFun, and Suntech leading the pack. Average solar stock gains were over 9%.

MarketWatch reports that the rally comes from investors hopeful that the recent 2010 lows may have exaggerated expected lows on corporate earnings from the slipping euro and a slow global economy.

Now the focus is on what the actual second-quarter earnings will be.

June 28-July 2: Dow, NASDAQ Plunge; Solar Actually Up

Mostly bad week has some surprises

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped a hefty 457 points since last Friday to finish at 9686.48, a 4.7% slide. The NASDAQ fared even worse with a 132-point drop to 2091.79, over a 6% setback. Most companies in the 20 Solar Stock Index saw losses but the composite actually gained over a point to 333.12. Renesola, Trina Solar and Yingli gained 14%, 5% and 3% respectively.

MarketWatch reports most stocks fell as a result of a combination of poor economic data stateside; wides concerns about the soundness of European sovereign debt; and a questionable outcome of the G20 meeting in Toronto.
