Major indexes gain 3-5%
Investors were relieved European banks mostly passed government stress tests so they switched their focus back the underlying strength of U.S. corporate earnings, according to yesterday's weekly stock summary by MarketWatch.
All of the three major market indexes showed marked gains for a week that included second quarter earnings from a slew of big-name companies. The latest boost came from General Electric (GE 15.71, +0.50, +3.29%) raising its quarterly dividend by 20%.
"The stress tests ended up not to be so stressful after all," said Burt White, chief investment officer at LPL Financial in the MarketWatch summary. "At the end of the day, the market is viewing this as sort of a mile marker to get behind us."
The Dow finished Friday at 10425, up nearly 326 points from last week for an upbeat 3.235% gain. NASDAQ did even better finishing at 2269, over a 90-point boost or 4.149%. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) beat the Street to end Friday at 378, a 22-point surge or 6.084%.
Eighteen in the 20SSI were up for the week with SolarFun, MEMC and Akeena Solar leading the way. Only Entech Solar and SunPower were off for the week
