Feb 1-5: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Down Less Than 1%

Solar stocks are bleeding less... for now

Although falling below 10,000 this week, the Dow Jones Industrial Averages dropped 55 points to close at 10012.23, a .55% dip. The NASDAQ slid six points to end at 2141.22, off .29% from last week. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) shaved less than a point from last Friday ending at 371.71, a .26% slip.

The week was wild as triple-digit changes for the Dow occurred on three days. The upswing today could be related to an encouraging jobs report that showed national unemployment at 9.7%, the lowest since August. MarketWatch reports that retailers through January posted five straight weeks of strong sales as Holiday gift cards are getting redeemed and more. clearance sales.

The American auto industry was mixed as Ford and GM posted increased sales and Chrysler losing. For the first time in a generation U.S. automakers may gain from Toyota's continuing problems with almost its entire line-up of cars. The Prius, the darling of Toyota for the past decade, is now facing an investigation by federal regulators about complaints of the breaking system and headlights suddenly going out. Many industry watchers are saying Toyota's climb back to customer trust could take a long time.

Thirteen solar stocks actually gained by small margins this week. The biggest winners were JA Solar and Trina Solar, up 6% and 9% respectively and several in the +3% range.

Jan 11-15: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Flip Over

Financial sector leads the downturn

After an impressive beginning on Wall Street, 2010 took a header this week, today being the worst day of trading so far. MarketWatch reports J.P. Morgan Chase lead the financial sector with weaker revenues than expected and a poor outlook. The Dow finished the week at 10609.65, off nearly nine points for last Friday, a drop of .08%. The NASDAQ fared worse ending over 29 points down, about a 1.3% slide. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) spilled nearly 48 points, an 11% drop since last week.

Intel Corp. led losses in the tech sector and most chip makers took losses as reflected by the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX), losing 3.44%. Eighteen in the 20SSI were down with Canadian Solar, Trina Solar and Renesola the biggest losers. Several solar companies however, did not lose all that was gained last week, strong as it was. Obviously, weak results for chip makers in general is bad for solar industry wide. Oil futures fell a fifth straight session today as warmer weather--despite the recent eastern cold snap--has created lower demand for heating oil.

Nov 16-20: Solar Tops Dow, NASDAQ

Third straight positive week for solar

The 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) gained just over 6 points for the week but it was enough for a 1.58% rise since last Friday. The Dow hopped about 48 points for about a .5% gain; the NASDAQ actually lost 22 points, slightly over a 1% drop.

MarketWatch reports most U.S. stocks ended the week with losses but small gains in health care stocks and consumer-related shares kept things from being worse. Although solar stocks did fairly well, most tech stocks were the biggest losers.

Twelve companies in the 20SSI finished ahead; average increase per stock was 2.64%. It was the third consecutive week of gains for the index and LDK Solar, SolarFun, Canadian Solar, Trina Solar and Akeena Solar lead the pack. SunPower was the week's biggest loser, dropping 23%.

Oct 19-23: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Down Less than 1%

Dow slips below 10,000

MarketWatch reports that major rail operator Burlington Northern projects a weak forecast fueling worries about freight demand, a barometer of the economy. Microsoft and Amazon.com fared well on reports of strong quarterly earnings.

The DJIA closed down nearly 24 points today at 9972.18, a .24% decline while the NASDAQ lost just 2.24 points, of .11%. Sixteen of the stocks in the 20SSI were down but the index slipped 1.65 points, a .39% decline. First Solar and Trina Solar were the biggest gainers.

Next week's Solar Power 2009 in Anaheim will shed light on any innovations in the industry so a good week should be in store both at the trade show and solar stocks, in general. The annual trade show will have 750 exhibitors from around the world becoming the ultimate showcase for the industry.

Wall Street took its biggest drop of the week today as a function of short-term profit taking. MarketWatch reports that Neil Menard at New York's Steben & Co, said many of the earnings gains are a result of cost cuts. He says investors are hungry for companies actually showing growth.

Oct 5-9: Solar Outperforms Dow, NASDAQ

All-around good week for stocks

Since last Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained over 377 point to finish at 9864.94, the year's highest. The NASDAQ rose 91 points to end today at 2139.28. Percentage gains for both were nearly 4% and 4.5% respectively. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) gained nearly 25 points, a 6% rise for the week.

MarketWatch reported IBM rallied the technology sector which Alcoa and others fed rising optimism about third-quarter earnings reports. IBM was up 3.64 or 3% to 125.93 likely related to Barclay's going bullish on the tech giant. Both Intel and AMD went up, as well.

Eighteen in the 20SSI rose with Trina, SunPower, SunTech and Yingli leading the others. The average stock in the index rose 5.6% easily outpacing the Dow and NASDAQ. After two dismal weeks solar makes the welcome rebound based on several likely reasons. Cost of panels remain down while the cost of electricity here in California continues to rise rapidly. There were 200 applications received by the CA Center for Sustainable Energy (which administers the CA rebate for SDG&E customers) during September. That figure coupled with the 350 applications in July means the rebate currently at $1.55 per installed AC watt will trigger down to $1.10 much sooner than thought. The California Solar Initiative is a good model for other states in that it stimulates solar PV sales in a severely depressed economy.

Aug 24-28: Dow, NASDAQ Inch Up; 8 Solar Stocks Gain

Usual late-summer vacations mean trading lull

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ gained about .4% in light trading for the week. The 20SSI was down just 1.27 to finish at 384.62 a .33% decline from the previous week.

Economists are predicting 250,000 jobs lost in August, slightly up from July's 247,000. The Labor Department released its report late Friday which, along with data from payroll processor ADP, could strongly influence trading on Monday.

Eight of the 20 solar stocks in this index finished up: Entech, First Solar, Kyocera, LDK Solar, Renesola, Satcon, Suntech and Trina Solar. None of the gains exceeded 6%--a far cry from the boom period from March through June. Solar inventories are still climbing as the economy remains weak and, although credit is loosening, it's not loose enough to allow many planned projects to get underway. On the other hand, those with cash or financing in place, solar panels, inverters, trackers and racking have never been cheaper. For one who experiencing the shortage of both silicon cells and panels in 2004-05, it is truly amazing the deals that can be made on even better equipment today. Coming electricity rate hikes--steep and soon--could force the issue for power-needy consumers small and large.

July 20-24: Solar Surpasses Dow, NASDAQ

Overall market sees second straight great week

The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) gained 65.5 point to finish at 458 points this week, a 16.69% increase from last week. The solar index outperformed both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and NASDAQ which finished with considerable gains of their own.

The Dow finished above 9000 points for the first time since January 2 with a rise of nearly 350 points. Added to last week, the DJIA has rocketed 947 points since July 10. The Dow has gained nine of the last ten trading days. Percentage-wise the Dow and NASDAQ have run neck-and neck in the past two weeks. Good quarterly earnings reports from many public companies has added more summer sunshine on Wall Street.

Solar stocks were lead this week by SunPower surging a gawdy 8.75 points to finish today at 32.04 a share, nearly a 38% rise. LDK Solar, Solarfun, SunTech, Trina Solar and Yingli all rose in the 20-30% range. Only MEMC Electrical failed to gain for the week albeit down a measily 2 cents per share.

Reuters reported today that SunPower just announced better-than-expected earnings while China's LDK Solar raised its sales forecast. The other large gainers, said Reuters, likely came on the coattails of the SunPower and LDK surges.

May 18-22: Dow, NASDAQ Up Smidgen; Solar Up 5.67%

Looming GM bankruptcy blights Dow's week

With just days left for General Motors officials to complete a major financial revamping, the former cornerstone of blue chippers could file for bankruptcy next week. Although this action would enable the troubled automaker to get $30M in federal money, it drove down GM's stock by 25% today and took several other down with it.

The DJIA finish up just .001% for the week; the NASDAQ was up .007%. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) fared better at 5.667% up regaining about one-quarter of last week's losses.

Solarfun Power Holdings was the biggest gainer for the week at +30.54% attributed to a strong first quarter earnings report released Tuesday.

Canadian Solar Inc (CSIQ) was close behind, gaining nearly 30% since Monday. The AP reported yesterday that CSI's "healthy balance sheet, product line strategy and underappreciated stock prompted an analyst to upgrad the solar energy product manufacturer, sending shares jumping."

Trina Solar was another PV industry winner climbing nearly 23% during the week. Evidently, investor sentiments are positive for solar stocks seen as being driven up by rising crude oil prices.

Solar stock watchers seem convinced the industry hit bottom in early March. Dow and NASDAQ averages generally have climbed since then, as well.

This Week: Dow Down, NASDAQ Up; Solar Dips About 2%

Banking sector giving investors heebee-jeebies

The six-week climb for the Dow ended today when the index fell 55 points from last week. However, NASDAQ kept its streak going with a 21.22 net increase for the week. The select 20 Solar Stock Index fell for the second straight week down about 2%.

The mixed performance is attributed to the shakiness of the American banking system. Just today four banks were shuttered by federal and state regulators in Georgia, Michigan, California and Idaho as the credit crisis crunches the economy.

Only six of the 20SSI finished ahead for the week: Amtel Systems, ECD (UniSolar), First Solar, Kyocera, Satcon and Trina Solar. Still, solar stocks are up over 50% since the mini-bull market began March 9. The PV industry will take hits but the future looks brighter for it and wind energy as more state and federal renewable energy standards take effect or get more stringent. For the first time ever, there is plenty of PV panels and related equipment onhand and this means good news for homeowners and commercial interests by driving down cost. Of course, a better credit atmosphere would help.

April 6-10: Solar Stocks Beat Dow, NASDAQ Again

Winners 15 Losers 5

For the fifth straight week the DJIA, NASDAQ and the select 20 Solar Stocks Index went up. The Dow observed Good Friday but closed yesterday at 8083.38, up 65.79 points for the week or +.8205%. The NASDAQ was up 30.67 to 1652.54 or 1.891%. The 20SSI gained surpassed last week's gains going up 2.455% net average. Solar winners outnumbered losers 15 to 5. Trina Solar was the biggest gainer at nearly 15% up.

The week started shakily with major drops on Monday but recovered on Thursday on reports that Wells Fargo bank expects profits of $3 billion for the first quarter thanks to the acquisition in January of Wachovia bank and an increase in mortgage applications.

Also, March sales show retailers may have weathered the worst of the recession. Other recent positive indicators, including a rise in U.S. factory orders for the first time in seven months, also may have proven to lift sentiment despite still record-high job losses and continuing unemployment claims remaining at a record high.

Since March 9: Dow Up 21%; Solar Up 56%

Dow's best 4-week spike since '33...

The Dow Jones Industrial Average just finished its best four-week streak since 1933. The Dow opened Monday, March 9 at 6626.95 then marched on to a stellar climb to 8017.19 at the end of trading today--a gaudy gain of 1390.24 points or 21%. The tech-concentrated NASDAQ grew from 1293.85 to 1621.87 points, 25.35% up. However, the 20SSI have to take the prize having gained 56.10% net combined since March 9.

GT Solar was the biggest gainer in solar gaining $2.50 a share for the week, over a 40% gain. SunTech, SatCon and Canadian Solar also had a good week of trading. It's disturbing mainstream media is either oblivious or doesn't want pick up on solar's thrust in the market. Three stocks, MEMC, Satcon and Trina Solar, exceeded their January 5 starts. For comparison's sake it would be timely to analyze the rise of the stocks in this index against the rapid demise of Chrysler and GM. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Investors seem to betting on an economic rebound and technology stocks despite grim employment reports. Some 663,000 jobs were lost in March nationwide for a total of 5.1 million since the recession began about 14 months ago. Reported unemployment jumped to 8.5% well exceeded the 8.1% projection.

Incentives for solar power installations and low panel prices plus the onset of spring is bolstering the PV industry. Just like housing, it's a great to time go solar if you have the cash or the credit. Signs of banks opening up are showing and this helps. Furthermore, one thing's for sure, utilities will raise rates if and when they can.
