May: Major Stock Indexes Down

Poor economic data gets blame

The Dow Industrials slipped over 1.9% in May, the first monthly drop in six month. The Dow closed Tuesday a 12570, 241 points down from April. The NASDAQ fared only slightly better with a 1.35% drop to finish at 2835, a 38-point slide from last month. Eighteen in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) were slammed in May with the index finishing at 393.55, a 47-point slip or nearly 12%.

Only 38,000 jobs were added last month when analysts projected 175,000. Also, the Institute for Supply Management reported growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector slowed to 53.5% in May from 60.4% in April, the largest one-month drop since 1984.

Supplies of solar panels are backing up, according to a source for this blog, and some major manufacturers appear to be dumping modules at unprecedented low pricing. It would appear a good time for consumers to add solar power to their homes. The question is how many are in a position to do so.

June 21-25: Major Indexes Fall After 3-Week Gains

European debt creeps investors

Both the Dow and NASDAQ lost about 3% since last Friday. Some point to the growth outlook for Europe which has been severely hit, not because of the debt crisis itself, but because of the austerity measures that have been set in place, according to a report in MarketWatch. Solar in the 20 Solar Stocks Index took a hit, too, with a 5% drop. Only two stocks, GT Solar and Satcon showed gains.

June 14-18: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Climb Again

Asian economy on upswing

Remarks from Caterpillar evidently encouraged investors outlook for the Asian economy, according to a report in today's MarketWatch. However, continued concern about European's debt problems, although out of panic mode from weeks ago, still helped moderate gains.

The Dow finished 258 points ahead of last Friday to finish at 10450.64, a 2.3% gain. NASDAQ composite was also up about 66 points to end today at 2309.08, a nearly a 3% gain. Stocks in the 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) jumped over 24 points finishing the week at 352.06, over a 7% increase. Major winners in solar were First Solar, SunPower and Suntech.

June 1-4: Markets Continue Slide

Dow ends below 10,000

A disappointing jobs report nationwide and Hungary's emergence as another European financial headache helped bring down all indexes on Wall Street this week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 205 points to end the week at 9931.22, a 2% loss and the lowest finish since October 30. The NASDAQ fell 38 points or 1.7% to 2219 and companies in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) slid 14 points to finish today at 321.45, a 4.3% fall.

MarketWatch reports the U.S. added jobs at the fastest rate in a decade but 95% of the 431,000 non-farm jobs came from hires for the 2010 Census. The 41,000 private-sector jobs that were added made the total jobs only slightly better. On another front, a leading official in Hungary revealed that the country is facing a Greece-like sovereign-debt problem.

All stocks in the 20SSI dropped in value. Canadian Solar lead all losers in dropping a whopping 35%.

April 19-23: Dow, NASDAQ Up; Solar Slips

Blue chips' streak best since 2004

Major indexes continued to climb this week. The Dow went up nearly 186 points from last Friday to finish at 11204.28, a 1.7% gain. NASDAQ chimed in with a 49 point surge to end at 2530.15, up 1.9%. The composite 20 Solar Stocks Index fell 4 points to 410.95, off 1.9%, but 13 gained.

Canadian Solar was the biggest loser finishing 3.77 points off from last Friday. The panel maker announced that it expects to incur a material net foreign exchange loss for the first quarter, estimated at $18 million to $20 million pre-tax, due to the significant depreciation of the Euro against the U.S. dollar during the quarter.

As reported by RTT News, CSI now expects PV module shipments in the first quarter of 2010 to be approximately 189 MW to 191 MW, with gross margins at 13% to 13.5%. This compares to prior expectations for shipments of approximately 180 MW to 190 MW and gross margin in the mid-teens.

Jan 11-15: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Flip Over

Financial sector leads the downturn

After an impressive beginning on Wall Street, 2010 took a header this week, today being the worst day of trading so far. MarketWatch reports J.P. Morgan Chase lead the financial sector with weaker revenues than expected and a poor outlook. The Dow finished the week at 10609.65, off nearly nine points for last Friday, a drop of .08%. The NASDAQ fared worse ending over 29 points down, about a 1.3% slide. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) spilled nearly 48 points, an 11% drop since last week.

Intel Corp. led losses in the tech sector and most chip makers took losses as reflected by the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX), losing 3.44%. Eighteen in the 20SSI were down with Canadian Solar, Trina Solar and Renesola the biggest losers. Several solar companies however, did not lose all that was gained last week, strong as it was. Obviously, weak results for chip makers in general is bad for solar industry wide. Oil futures fell a fifth straight session today as warmer weather--despite the recent eastern cold snap--has created lower demand for heating oil.

Jan 4-8: Dow, NASDAQ A-OK; Solar up 7.55%

Good start despite jobs report...

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 190 points during the first week of 2010 to end at 10618.19, a 1.823% gain. The NASDAQ also closed up by 48 points to finish today at 2317.17, a 2.116% surge. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) however, topped both with a nearly 34 point jump to end the year's first week at 482.01, a 7.55% leap.

A late rally today boosted major stock indexes despite a disappointing jobs report of 85,000 payroll cuts last month which was more than expected. MarketWatch reports the unemployment rate remains at 10%, a squeak better than the 10.1% expected. Actually throughout the recent economic slowdown, stock investors have often shrugged off poor jobs news. Oddly, the S&P 500 has averaged a .3% gain on days the Labor Department jobs reports were short of expectations and actually fell .1% on days DOL beat expectations, according to data from Shaeffer's Investor Research reported in MarketWatch.

All but one stock in the 20SSI gained this week. Chinese solar companies or those with Chinese-made panels or related equipment, tended to do better. China's commitment of have 15% of its electricity coming from renewable sources by 2020 is already spurring more solar industry interest. Some say panel prices have or are near to bottoming out and could likely go up again as spring nears.

Solar's biggest winners this week were Canadian Solar, Energy Conversion Devices, Evergreen and SolarFun. Average solar stock increase in the 20SSI was over 11% for the week.

Solar Index Climbs 6% Since Thursday

Dow, NASDAQ up, too

The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) has gained nearly 27 points since last year's close Thursday of 448.15 to finish at 474.82, a 5.95% climb. Both the Dow and NASDAQ have begun 2010 well, respectively gaining 144 points to 10572.02 (up 1.38%) and 40 points to 2308.71 (+1.74%) so far this very new year.

All but three stocks of the 20SSI finished up after today's trading. The biggest winners were Yingli Solar (up 12.6%), JA Solar Holdings (+7.59%), and Canadian Solar (+5.55%).

One year ago today when the 20SSI began tracking, the index closed at 415.41, so the index has comeback an appreciable 14.3% in a bad financial year. Solar's rebound really looks good compared with the market descent--which included all major indexes--culminating on March 6 when the 20SSI hit 266.01. From that time solar shows a gaudy 78% surge.

Chinese solar stocks have been gaining well the past month on signs of an optimist future for the solar industry. China recently made a renewable energy mandate to increase the use of non-fossil fuels by 15% by 2020.

Dec 21-24: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar All Strong

Market looks to end bullish

Wall Street keeps looking up even though many maintain the worst of the economic downturn is still ahead. The Dow gained over 191 points since Friday's close, nearly a 2% gain. NASDAQ gained 74 and the 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) added over 11 points, 3.3% and 2.6% respectively.

MarketWatch says the bulls are out of the gate but nowhere near stampeding. A weekly poll by the American Association of Individual Investors reported that 38% of single investors said they were bullish on stocks for the next six months. This is 19% higher than last March but 13% less than the survey showed in August. The current market rebound is still not close than the 2007 Bull Market but still bodes well in light of the country's current state. The 2009 rebound could continue into next year as investors may hold onto stocks with hopes of recouping some 2008 losses.

Thirteen in the 20SSI gained, a fourth straight positive week for this solar index. Biggest winners included Akeena, Amtel Systems and Canadian Solar. Average solar stocks gained over 3%.

Nov 23-27: Stocks Take Dubai World of Hurt

Get yourself a man-made island...

About $60 billion in debt is in danger of default by Dubai World, a state-owned conglomerate in the Middle East. This is the company making those surreal palm-shaped island resorts for the world's mega-rich. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, which figuratively mints money with black gold. (Ed.: One would wonder how an area so enriched by gross oil revenues could ever be over-extended on credit.) According to the Dubai World website, the conglomerate Fortunately however, it looks as though most debt liability will be taken by European institutions as most lenders in Europe are generally exposed to the Middle East.

Still, the possible default had a negative impact late this week on U.S. stocks, helping to set back the Dow down eight points and the NASDAQ about seven. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) dipped just over five points. Fifteen of the 20 stocks finished down but none by much. Canadian Solar continued its strong position in the PV industry with a 51 cents per share gain, the index leader.
