March 15-19: Dow, NASDAQ Up; Solar Slips

March continues strong so far

The Dow and NASDAQ gained more momentum this week. Gaining 117 points, the DJIA closed Friday at 10741.98. Since February 26 the Dow has gained 417 points, a 4% rise. The NASDAQ rose 7 points to finish at 2374.41. However, stocks in the 20SSI composite slipped 13 points to finish at 371.55, nearly a 4% dip from last week.

The slip by solar is odd as inventories of panels are beginning to be grabbed up by Germany and many large-scale projects finally getting underway in the U.S. Maybe investors know more than this writer knows. Time will tell.

Feb 22-26: Dow, NASDAQ Slip: Solar Down 5%

Solar at lowest since April

The Dow slipped 77 points since last Friday to finish at 10325.26, a .75% loss. NASDAQ fared better with a nearly a 6-point drop to end at 2238.26. a .25% slip. Composite shares in the 20 Solar Stocks Index dropped nearly 19 points finishing a 353.08, almost a 5% slide.

Still, stocks in the DJIA and NASDAQ finished February considerably higher than at the end of January as the NASDAQ composite gained over 4%. February was the best month of trading for the two major indexes since November. The 20SSI lost 5.55% since January 29.

MarketWatch reports the modest gains "lifted by some improvement in U.S. economic data, though worries about consumer spending and sovereign debt kept a lid on optimism."

Investors were heartened on Friday by a Commerce Department report which said the fourth quarter last year grew by 5.9%--best since Q3 of 2003--surpassing expectations of 5.7%. Consumer spending was more modest than expected however with a 1.7% rate increase when 2% was expected.

Solar stocks should make a comeback soon as more people "think solar" when the days get longer and sunnier.

Jan 25-29: Dow, NASDAQ Down Again; Solar Up a Sliver

Market still in funk...

The Dow Jones Industrial Averages and the NASDAQ continued their slide this week but not nearly as bad as last week's bloodbath. Solar stocks in the 20SSI fared a little better inching the index up nearly three points. February could bring better news on results of Ford's $2.7 billion profit for 2009. Or it could drop below 10,000, a rather dreary possibility.

Jan 18-22: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Meltdown

Some say correction long overdue

The Dow Jones Industrial Averages suffered its worst week since last February dropping 437 points for the week to end at 10172.98, a drop of 4.3%. The NASDAQ took a little less of a hit losing nearly 83 points to finish at 2205.29, a 3.75% slip. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) was hit by a train and lost 64 points to end at 369.76, a horrific 17% loss. Since Jan 8 the 20SSI has dropped over 112 points, off 30%.

Paul Vigna at the Dow Jones Newswire says the correction was long overdue, that the market had made no such adjustment for eleven months. He cites uncertainty with health care reform, the Massachusetts election, the possibility of Ben Bernanke not being reappointed, Freddie and Fannie Mae problems all leading to a questionable time for trading.

Besides that malaise, the German government announced this week that it's cutting solar subsidies by 15%. This is in addition to the annual decline for solar subsidies as Germany attempts to wean solar companies off government support. In a story by Graham Winfrey in the Business Insider's Green Sheet it is reported that Germany, the world leader in photovoltaic installations, accounted for 50% of global PV demand last year.

Jan 4-8: Dow, NASDAQ A-OK; Solar up 7.55%

Good start despite jobs report...

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 190 points during the first week of 2010 to end at 10618.19, a 1.823% gain. The NASDAQ also closed up by 48 points to finish today at 2317.17, a 2.116% surge. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) however, topped both with a nearly 34 point jump to end the year's first week at 482.01, a 7.55% leap.

A late rally today boosted major stock indexes despite a disappointing jobs report of 85,000 payroll cuts last month which was more than expected. MarketWatch reports the unemployment rate remains at 10%, a squeak better than the 10.1% expected. Actually throughout the recent economic slowdown, stock investors have often shrugged off poor jobs news. Oddly, the S&P 500 has averaged a .3% gain on days the Labor Department jobs reports were short of expectations and actually fell .1% on days DOL beat expectations, according to data from Shaeffer's Investor Research reported in MarketWatch.

All but one stock in the 20SSI gained this week. Chinese solar companies or those with Chinese-made panels or related equipment, tended to do better. China's commitment of have 15% of its electricity coming from renewable sources by 2020 is already spurring more solar industry interest. Some say panel prices have or are near to bottoming out and could likely go up again as spring nears.

Solar's biggest winners this week were Canadian Solar, Energy Conversion Devices, Evergreen and SolarFun. Average solar stock increase in the 20SSI was over 11% for the week.

Solar Index Climbs 6% Since Thursday

Dow, NASDAQ up, too

The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) has gained nearly 27 points since last year's close Thursday of 448.15 to finish at 474.82, a 5.95% climb. Both the Dow and NASDAQ have begun 2010 well, respectively gaining 144 points to 10572.02 (up 1.38%) and 40 points to 2308.71 (+1.74%) so far this very new year.

All but three stocks of the 20SSI finished up after today's trading. The biggest winners were Yingli Solar (up 12.6%), JA Solar Holdings (+7.59%), and Canadian Solar (+5.55%).

One year ago today when the 20SSI began tracking, the index closed at 415.41, so the index has comeback an appreciable 14.3% in a bad financial year. Solar's rebound really looks good compared with the market descent--which included all major indexes--culminating on March 6 when the 20SSI hit 266.01. From that time solar shows a gaudy 78% surge.

Chinese solar stocks have been gaining well the past month on signs of an optimist future for the solar industry. China recently made a renewable energy mandate to increase the use of non-fossil fuels by 15% by 2020.

Dec 14-18: Tech, Solar Stocks Kick Some Butt

Solar index up third straight week

The DJIA slipped almost 143 points (-1.4%) since last Friday although today's finish was stronger than expected at 10328.89. Tech stocks did well however, and the NASDAQ gained 21 points--nearly 1%--to end at 2211.69 with Intel, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard helping lead the way. Best of all, the 20 Solar Stock Index gained 14.55 points, a 3.43% gain to end at 438.99.

Boeing took a major hit when Ryanair cancelled an order for 200 new 737-800 jets and the stock became the Dow's biggest loser for the week. Oracle and Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry, reported better-than-expected earnings reports and were two more reasons why tech stocks purred since last Friday.

Amtech Systems was solar's biggest winner on news the company closed $10 million in sales orders and a larger order from one existing customer. JA Solar was another big gainer, reporting on better Q4 earnings than earlier guidance suggested. Thirteen in the 20SSI gained this week with the average stock up over 8.13% overall.

Dec 7-11: Solar Outpaces Dow, NASDAQ Again

20SSI up over 10% since Nov 27

For the second week straight the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) has out gained both the Dow Industrial Averages and the NASDAQ indexes. The 20SSI was up 10.45 points to finish at 424.44 while the Dow gained nearly 86 points finishing at 10471.5 and NASDAQ dropped 4 points to end today at 2190.31.

As results of the Copenhagen climate conference are made clearer, consensus shows the need to shift the energy paradigm from conventional, CO2-producing power sources to clean, renewable energy sources as the sun, wind and geothermal. Eleven in the 20SSI showed gains while another three remained unchanged from last Friday. Leaders were Akeena, Amtel Systems and SunTech.

Should this trend continue, solar will end 2009 higher than its Jan 5, 2009 close at 415.41.

MarketWatch reports that recent data from retailers and general consumer sentiment appear strong, uplifting hopes for a good holiday season for spending and bolstering retail profits. It appears most, if not all, major economic yardsticks are pointing toward recovery in the U.S.

Nov 30-Dec 4: Solar Tops Dow, NASDAQ

Decent jobs report bolsters week...

While the Dow struggled to a small gain this week, the NASDAQ was up 2.6% and the 20 Solar Stocks Index gained over 30 points to finish at 413.99, nearly an 8% gain since last Friday.

A better-than-expected jobs report from the federal government pushed the Dow up over 180 points earlier today before slipping back to a modest gain of 78.98 to finish at 10388.9.

All but one stock in the 20SSI went up for the week with the average stock price increase at over 8%. Leaders were LDK Solar, Yingli and Satcon. A decent December could beat the year's start of 415.41, a moral victory if nothing else.

Nov 23-27: Stocks Take Dubai World of Hurt

Get yourself a man-made island...

About $60 billion in debt is in danger of default by Dubai World, a state-owned conglomerate in the Middle East. This is the company making those surreal palm-shaped island resorts for the world's mega-rich. Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates, which figuratively mints money with black gold. (Ed.: One would wonder how an area so enriched by gross oil revenues could ever be over-extended on credit.) According to the Dubai World website, the conglomerate Fortunately however, it looks as though most debt liability will be taken by European institutions as most lenders in Europe are generally exposed to the Middle East.

Still, the possible default had a negative impact late this week on U.S. stocks, helping to set back the Dow down eight points and the NASDAQ about seven. The 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) dipped just over five points. Fifteen of the 20 stocks finished down but none by much. Canadian Solar continued its strong position in the PV industry with a 51 cents per share gain, the index leader.

Nov 16-20: Solar Tops Dow, NASDAQ

Third straight positive week for solar

The 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) gained just over 6 points for the week but it was enough for a 1.58% rise since last Friday. The Dow hopped about 48 points for about a .5% gain; the NASDAQ actually lost 22 points, slightly over a 1% drop.

MarketWatch reports most U.S. stocks ended the week with losses but small gains in health care stocks and consumer-related shares kept things from being worse. Although solar stocks did fairly well, most tech stocks were the biggest losers.

Twelve companies in the 20SSI finished ahead; average increase per stock was 2.64%. It was the third consecutive week of gains for the index and LDK Solar, SolarFun, Canadian Solar, Trina Solar and Akeena Solar lead the pack. SunPower was the week's biggest loser, dropping 23%.

Aug 10-14: Dow Off; NASDAQ, Solar Also Tumble

Consumer confidence dipping

The DJIA's four-week run of gains ended this week down 49 points from last Friday. NASDAQ was also down--about 15 points this week but drops for both major indexes amounted to less than 1%. All but two in the 20SSI went down for a generally sour week throughout Wall Street. Fortunately, it's August and trading is relatively light.

MarketWatch reports that consumer confidence has fallen based on the Reuters/University of Michigan index of consumer sentiment which fell to 63.2 this month from 66 in July. By contrast, analyst's consensus predicted a rise to 68.5.

Consumers companies are feeling the pinch. Nordstrom lead the sector's declines by falling 1.89 to 27.87 after its Q209 profit fell 27%. Consumer sentiment also hurt some commodities including oil entities. Certain banks, like Bank of America, helped to offset overall declines with some modest gains.

As for solar stocks, Chris Morrison, energy writer at bnet.com, reported yesterday that large solar panel inventories are taking a toll on the solar industry. Oversupply hit LDK Solar hard last quarter by taking a $217 million loss for its unsold solar wafer stock. Of that amount, $175.8 million was in inventory write-downs, meaning LDK was forced to reduce on-paper value of unsold wafers to reflect current market pricing. JA Solar, also a solar cell maker, said its inventories rose 18%, a common condition of silicon wafer and solar panel manufacturers. Still, most solar companies, Morrison reports, seem to believe the industry will be over the hump in 2010 or early 2011.

iSupply, an electronics research firm, predicted oversupply lasting into 2012; that half of all panels now being made are going into inventory. Such a glut of panels has an adverse effect on high-concentration photovoltaics makers (HCPV) as their modules are based on cutting cost-per-watt pricing by using Fresnel lenses (mostly) to maximize output of much less silicon per module. With high-grade silicon wafers in abundance and prices falling, HCPV technology becomes less important.
