Aug 16-20: Dow Slips; NASDAQ, Solar Eke Gains

Continued weak economic news

The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a second-straight week of losses, although this week was much less severe than last. The Dow slipped 89.53 points to finish at 10214, a 2.98% drop from last week. The NASDAQ index picked up just over 6 points to finish at 2178, a .3% rise. The 20 Solar Stocks Index composite gained a trifling 2.13 points to end at 360.43 or .6%.

MarketWatch reports the drop in the Euro shows a continuing sovereign debt problem abroad. Better corporate news was countered by weaker-than-expected economic data for a push-pull week of trading on Wall Street. Solar's biggest gainer in the 20SSI was Amtel Systems, up over 12%.

According to MarketWatch, some investors remained optimistic charging that too much reliance was placed on short-term jobs data, although volatility in stock prices should remain through the fall.

Dec 21-24: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar All Strong

Market looks to end bullish

Wall Street keeps looking up even though many maintain the worst of the economic downturn is still ahead. The Dow gained over 191 points since Friday's close, nearly a 2% gain. NASDAQ gained 74 and the 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) added over 11 points, 3.3% and 2.6% respectively.

MarketWatch says the bulls are out of the gate but nowhere near stampeding. A weekly poll by the American Association of Individual Investors reported that 38% of single investors said they were bullish on stocks for the next six months. This is 19% higher than last March but 13% less than the survey showed in August. The current market rebound is still not close than the 2007 Bull Market but still bodes well in light of the country's current state. The 2009 rebound could continue into next year as investors may hold onto stocks with hopes of recouping some 2008 losses.

Thirteen in the 20SSI gained, a fourth straight positive week for this solar index. Biggest winners included Akeena, Amtel Systems and Canadian Solar. Average solar stocks gained over 3%.

Dec 7-11: Solar Outpaces Dow, NASDAQ Again

20SSI up over 10% since Nov 27

For the second week straight the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) has out gained both the Dow Industrial Averages and the NASDAQ indexes. The 20SSI was up 10.45 points to finish at 424.44 while the Dow gained nearly 86 points finishing at 10471.5 and NASDAQ dropped 4 points to end today at 2190.31.

As results of the Copenhagen climate conference are made clearer, consensus shows the need to shift the energy paradigm from conventional, CO2-producing power sources to clean, renewable energy sources as the sun, wind and geothermal. Eleven in the 20SSI showed gains while another three remained unchanged from last Friday. Leaders were Akeena, Amtel Systems and SunTech.

Should this trend continue, solar will end 2009 higher than its Jan 5, 2009 close at 415.41.

MarketWatch reports that recent data from retailers and general consumer sentiment appear strong, uplifting hopes for a good holiday season for spending and bolstering retail profits. It appears most, if not all, major economic yardsticks are pointing toward recovery in the U.S.

This Week: Dow Down, NASDAQ Up; Solar Dips About 2%

Banking sector giving investors heebee-jeebies

The six-week climb for the Dow ended today when the index fell 55 points from last week. However, NASDAQ kept its streak going with a 21.22 net increase for the week. The select 20 Solar Stock Index fell for the second straight week down about 2%.

The mixed performance is attributed to the shakiness of the American banking system. Just today four banks were shuttered by federal and state regulators in Georgia, Michigan, California and Idaho as the credit crisis crunches the economy.

Only six of the 20SSI finished ahead for the week: Amtel Systems, ECD (UniSolar), First Solar, Kyocera, Satcon and Trina Solar. Still, solar stocks are up over 50% since the mini-bull market began March 9. The PV industry will take hits but the future looks brighter for it and wind energy as more state and federal renewable energy standards take effect or get more stringent. For the first time ever, there is plenty of PV panels and related equipment onhand and this means good news for homeowners and commercial interests by driving down cost. Of course, a better credit atmosphere would help.

Solar Stocks Update: Jan. 26-30, 2009

Down month finishes upbeat, sort of

Okay, it was a dismal month for the Dow, NASDAQ and solar stocks overall. This post I added an additional stat showing percentage loss or gain since Jan. 5 when this stock index began. Only two solar stocks were up for the month, Amtel Systems and Entech Solar (formerly WorldWater & Solar Technologies). Either these companies have something good going or they just got lucky. Average solar stock loss for all twenty was over 18% but this week finished on a high note as gainers topped losers 14 to 6 with the average stock price up for the week about 3%.

Reasons for the down market involve the same suspects: Weak economy exacerbated by
growing unemployment; banks still stingy about lending (our money!); and an anemic economy worldwide that can't purchase our exports (such as they are). As for solar, wintertime simply is not a good solar sales period. What's more, the lending problem has stymied several large solar projects but power purchase agreements are beginning to jump-start others which is a reason why the month has finished up. Furthermore, extension of the solar investment tax credit is having a positive effect, at least here in California, where the rebates are still decent; electricity rates are still climbing; and the sun still produces appreciable kilowatt hours despite the season.

I guess it's appropriate now to remind readers it's always the sun that gives a cloud its silver lining.
