CA Farmers Drill Wells, Pump with Solar

Drill, baby, drill! Then go solar....

Sometimes solutions to problems are hidden in plain sight. Two avocado farmers in San Diego County experienced exactly that.

Their problems were two-fold: The skyrocketing cost of water for irrigation and the equally exploding costs to pump it. Their solution, tripped upon by sheer necessity, came by drilling for their own water, digging their own ponds to hold it and building solar power systems to pump it. Even better, a lot of the equipment and labor was already on hand.

Of course, drilling the wells and making the holding areas cost money but the medium- and long-term savings are considerable. What's more, water availability and the rising
cost for it is mitigated. Going solar however, required some outside expertise.

Enter Larry Slominski.

Slominski's been in solar since way before solar was cool. His first-hand experience ranges from installing off-grid PV systems in Micronesia while in the Peace Corps to a 2MW grid-tied installation at the Fresno-Yosemite International Airport.

Larry Slominski
A mechanical engineer by training, Slominski has been involved with every facet of the solar industry including both crystalline and amorphous-silicon panel technologies; single- and dual-access trackers; concentrated PV; string and micro-inverters; and all forms of ballasted, BIPV and penetrating roof applications and ground-mounted projects. Walking with him at a solar trade show and seeing someone in every third booth hailing Larry like a long-lost army buddy, you know he is a maven of the solar field.

Slominski worked with the two farmers on practical panel array plans on the land made available. His services also included compliance, permitting, rebate and tax incentive advisement, equipment selection and procurement, project oversight, inspection preparation and system commissioning.

"Solar panel prices are at an all-time low and when you add incentives along with the high cost of energy and water, in these cases," says Slominski, "it's a great time to go solar." He said when on-staff farm labor is added to the mix, payback can come in less than five years. One of the two farmers, he says, will save a cool million by taking this new tack.

"Farmers know if they cannot control external market forces, they can  vastly improve their bottom line by drilling their own wells and utilizing solar power," Slominski concludes, "and these two alternatives have been there in plain sight for quite awhile."

May: Major Stock Indexes Down

Poor economic data gets blame

The Dow Industrials slipped over 1.9% in May, the first monthly drop in six month. The Dow closed Tuesday a 12570, 241 points down from April. The NASDAQ fared only slightly better with a 1.35% drop to finish at 2835, a 38-point slide from last month. Eighteen in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) were slammed in May with the index finishing at 393.55, a 47-point slip or nearly 12%.

Only 38,000 jobs were added last month when analysts projected 175,000. Also, the Institute for Supply Management reported growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector slowed to 53.5% in May from 60.4% in April, the largest one-month drop since 1984.

Supplies of solar panels are backing up, according to a source for this blog, and some major manufacturers appear to be dumping modules at unprecedented low pricing. It would appear a good time for consumers to add solar power to their homes. The question is how many are in a position to do so.

July 5-9: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Rally Big Time (Adjusted)

Big bounce back

U.S. stocks had their best week in nearly a year on optimism of second-quarter earnings that propelled a surge from the worst levels this year.

The DJIA shot 511 points up to finish Friday at 10197.72, a 5.3% gain. NASDAQ followed suit with a 105-point gain to 2196.45, a 5% jump. The 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) saw a second straight plus week with a eight-point gain to 362.93, a 9% bump. (NOTE: SSI total was first reported closing at 341.28 for the week. Corrected 7/17/10)

Nineteen in the 20SSI gained with JA Solar, SolarFun, and Suntech leading the pack. Average solar stock gains were over 9%.

MarketWatch reports that the rally comes from investors hopeful that the recent 2010 lows may have exaggerated expected lows on corporate earnings from the slipping euro and a slow global economy.

Now the focus is on what the actual second-quarter earnings will be.

June 21-25: Major Indexes Fall After 3-Week Gains

European debt creeps investors

Both the Dow and NASDAQ lost about 3% since last Friday. Some point to the growth outlook for Europe which has been severely hit, not because of the debt crisis itself, but because of the austerity measures that have been set in place, according to a report in MarketWatch. Solar in the 20 Solar Stocks Index took a hit, too, with a 5% drop. Only two stocks, GT Solar and Satcon showed gains.

June 14-18: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Climb Again

Asian economy on upswing

Remarks from Caterpillar evidently encouraged investors outlook for the Asian economy, according to a report in today's MarketWatch. However, continued concern about European's debt problems, although out of panic mode from weeks ago, still helped moderate gains.

The Dow finished 258 points ahead of last Friday to finish at 10450.64, a 2.3% gain. NASDAQ composite was also up about 66 points to end today at 2309.08, a nearly a 3% gain. Stocks in the 20 Solar Stock Index (20SSI) jumped over 24 points finishing the week at 352.06, over a 7% increase. Major winners in solar were First Solar, SunPower and Suntech.

June 1-4: Markets Continue Slide

Dow ends below 10,000

A disappointing jobs report nationwide and Hungary's emergence as another European financial headache helped bring down all indexes on Wall Street this week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 205 points to end the week at 9931.22, a 2% loss and the lowest finish since October 30. The NASDAQ fell 38 points or 1.7% to 2219 and companies in the 20 Solar Stocks Index (20SSI) slid 14 points to finish today at 321.45, a 4.3% fall.

MarketWatch reports the U.S. added jobs at the fastest rate in a decade but 95% of the 431,000 non-farm jobs came from hires for the 2010 Census. The 41,000 private-sector jobs that were added made the total jobs only slightly better. On another front, a leading official in Hungary revealed that the country is facing a Greece-like sovereign-debt problem.

All stocks in the 20SSI dropped in value. Canadian Solar lead all losers in dropping a whopping 35%.

May 24-28: NASDAQ Up; Dow, Solar Slip

Major indexes lose 8% this month

A downgrade of Spain's debt ends the worst month for stocks in 15 months. Since last Friday the Dow slipped 57 points to 10136.55, a .56% loss, but much less hemorrhaging than a week ago. The NASDAQ composite actually gained 28 points to end at 2257.04, a 1.25% hop. The 20 Solar Stocks Index fell just 2 points to end at 335.54.

Some have called May's drop as the beginning of a bear market and more is to come. However, the Dow is still hovering at the milestone 10,000 which is 35% above its level in February 2009. Banks in California and Nevada failed this week to bring the 2010 national tally to 78.

Nine of the 20SSI stocks gained and two showed no net change for the week. Biggest winners were SunPower, Solarfun and Renesola.

May 17-21: Dow, NASDAQ, Solar Slip More

Maybe "flash crash" wasn't an anomaly

When the market tumbled precipitously about two weeks ago, some thought a computer glitch was part of the blame. On May 6 the Dow dropped to 9870--nearly a thousand points. But today the Dow finished at 10193, just above that earlier low so blaming outlying factors is questionable. Maybe the "flash crash" did a fair job of pricing the market, after all.

The Dow was off 427 points from last Friday. The NASDAQ composite fell 118 points to 2229 for the week. The 20SSI lost nearly 21 points to end today at 337.56. All but one stock, GT Solar, slipped to lows not seen in about a year. Unease with the European financial situation continues to rock stocks.

May 10-14: Dow, NASDAQ Up; Solar Slips by Sliver

General bounce back from last week

All major indexes made significant gains earlier this week but cut back by Friday. The Dow went over 10800 at midweek on enthusiasm for the large European bailout package then scaled back yesterday and today on renewed worries about Europe's finances.

The DJIA gained 241 points from last Friday to finish today at10620.16, a 2.3% boost. The NASDAQ composite climbed 81 points to end at 2346.85, nearly a 3.6% rise for the week. Although 13 companies gained in the 20 Solar Stocks Index, the index lost less than a point to finish at 358.19.

Now that Germany's very generous solar feed in tariff is being officially cut back this summer, many of the larger panel makers see their stocks in flux. The California Solar Initiative, once the flagship of all U.S. solar incentive programs, is seeing success as a double sword. As residential and commercial PV system installations exploded last year, rebates have triggered down significantly. Despite continuing low panel prices, rebates for PG&E, SCE and SDG&E customers don't amount to much so sales are slowing.

Solar winners for the week include Entech Solar, Akeena Solar, ECD and Suntech. Losers included First Solar, LDK Solar and SunPower.

Solar Stocks Report Begins Jan. 9

My last post contends that solar stocks in America are becoming mainstream on all of the major indexes. I've noticed over the past two weeks just how closely ten top, publicly-held solar companies, listed in the previous post, have paralleled the DJIA and NASDAQ nearly point-for-point.

While I'm obviously an advocate for solar power worldwide, I only have a general knowledge of the machinations of the stocks and bonds world. Still, investors and non-investors look to the major stocks indexes to gauge growth of any industry and particular stocks within that industry. For that reason, a new feature, tentatively called "Key 20 Solar Stocks This Week" will begin posting Friday, January 9, 2009.

Why Follow Solar Stocks?

First off, we can assume the Obama Administration will be more proactive in the realm of renewable energy. Indeed, solar and wind power could be the Magic Bullets for the new administration in that they can: (1) provide good jobs that cannot be exported: (2) reduce carbon emissions by burning less coal and natural gas for power thereby (3) mitigate the effects of global warming. The extension of the federal solar tax credit to 2016 can be a boon for solar in all 50 states. (BTW, I sold a solar kit to a man in Alaska four years ago which he installed on his summertime fishing lodge on the Kenai Peninsula. It would have cost him $20,000 to bring utility power in which he would use just four months a year. Long summer days gives him plenty of power exactly when he needs it. My overall point is that solar makes sense nationwide.)

Hedging like a college football coach, I cannot confirm nor will I deny that solar stocks could be the ones to buy in the near future. More states are instituting their own rebates and/or tax credits. Here in San Diego, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced this month that the city will begin a solar loan program in March that allows citizens to purchase PV systems at a low, fixed interest rate paid over twenty years with state property taxes. All of these incentives stimulate growth of the solar industry even during these difficult times because the future cost of electricity is, at best, any one's guess.

Selecting the Key 20 Stocks

If somewhat subjective, choosing the key solar stocks will be an informed selection on my part. The best I can say is they will be panel or inverter manufacturers; cover crystalline and thin-film technologies; and will be comprised of major stocks worldwide with the preponderance being American companies. Any stock that is delisted by the NYSE or NASDAQ obviously will be dropped from the list and replaced.

My Ulterior Motive

The posts in this blog covering the price of panels and solar stocks generated the most hits, by far. I will not be forsaking the educational angle of this blog but generating hits is important to any blogger. For those who are passionate about what they write, like I am, will know online traffic is the name of the game. It's about spreading the word.

Care & Handling of the Solar Tax Credit

By now most know the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 extended the solar investment tax credit (ITC) through 2016 and the $2000 cap for residential solar installations has been dropped allowing for the full 30% credit businesses get. The extension, as it turns out, might be the only good thing for Main Street in a major chunk of legislation aimed at fixing Wall Street. It's a very go
od thing, to be sure, but let's review the details.

The Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE, see Related Links) summarized the solar electric ITC extension in October thus:

"A taxpayer may claim a credit of 30% of qualified expenditures for a system that serves a dwelling unit located in the U.S. used as a residence by the taxpayer. Expenditures with respect to the equipment are treated as made when the installation is completed. If the installation is on a new home, the 'placed in service' date is the date of occupancy by the homeowner. Expenditures include labor costs for onsite preparation, assembly, or original system installation and for piping or wiring to interconnect a system to the home. If the federal tax credit exceeds tax liability, the excess amount may be carried forward to the succeeding taxable year... Consumers who receive other incentives are advised to consult with a tax professional regarding how to calculate this federal tax credit."

DSRIRE went on to say that in case of joint occupancy, the maximum qualifying amount allowed is $6,667 per occupant. Lifewise, the credit may be claimed proportionally by how much each individual paid. Finally, the law states the PV installation must be used as a residence but does not have to be the principal residence to qualify. Any unused tax credit from the first tax year may be carried over to the next tax year.

It is particularly important to consult a CPA or tax attorney if your state offers a solar rebate which is taken with the federal tax credit. Normally, the tax credit is taken on the balance after the rebate is deducted from the total installation cost. If however, one takes the tax credit against the whole installation cost along with the rebate, the rebate could be taxed as income. At present, the issue is better determined by a professional who also considers the solar customer's tax situation.

A four-page set of frequently asked questions about the solar tax credit was produced by the Solar Energy Industries Association, the national trade organization for the solar industry. It is available at: http://seia.org/galleries/pdf/ITC_Frequently_Asked_Questions_10_9_08.pdf
